LANGUAGE ARTS
8th Grade January News
GRAMMAR CRATE
The students are given 10-15 minutes in class every Monday to work on these.
There are 5 categories (punctuation, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and writing)
and the students are expected to complete one activity in each category by Friday,
May 23rd. Students are allowed to stay after school on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Thursdays to work on them.
WEEKLY REMINDERS
There will be a final exam over all the Weekly Reminders and Words of the Week on
Friday, May 23rd. We will be reviewing all 36 Weekly Reminders and Words of the Week
over the course of the week with quizzes and then take the final exam on Friday, May 23rd.
Since this test covers everything from the beginning of the year until now please work on
practicing these now until the test. You do not want to cram all the words and reminders into one night of studying.
GRAMMAR
We are working very gradually on Chapter 20 covering clauses and phrases. We should be ready for a test the week of May 19th. With any remaining time, we will focus on Chapter 24 which focuses on agreement in sentences with verbs and point of view. We will not finish this chapter, but we may quiz on the sections we do finish.
DIAGRAMMING
The week of May 19th we will learn to diagram infinitives. We will practice in class during the week and have a quest on these on Thursday, May 22nd.
DOG
We will practice proofreading and editing skills in class during the week of May 26th.
6+1 WRITING
During the week of May 12th, we will become ISTEP judges and analyze other Indiana students' writing for the 6+1 writing traits. We will work together and in small groups during the week, and then on Friday, May 16th, we will work individually to judge a piece of writing by a random and anonymous fellow 8th grade student for their use of the 6+1 traits.
LITERATURE
8MK is working with Miss Brant on The Diary of Anne Frank.
8KK is working with Miss Perry on some short stories by Mark Twain. There will be a test over these by Thursday, May 15th. They will then be working on Shakespearre's Midsummer's Night Dream.
VOCABULARY
Unit 14 will have a test on Friday, May 16th.
Unit 15 will be worked on for the two weeks after Unit 14 and have a test on Thursday, May 29th.
